Why Unvault

The best place to sell your 22K gold online

High purity jewelry can be underexplained when a buyer weighs the whole piece without showing how purity, stones, clasps, or craftsmanship affected the number. Unvault gives you an itemized estimate first, so you can understand the calculation before deciding to sell.

The old way
Pawn / mail-in
  • A scale reading with no purity explanation
  • 22K, 916, and 917 marks treated inconsistently
  • Stones and non gold parts ignored in the calculation
  • Craftsmanship or designer value reduced to scrap
  • Pressure to accept a same day offer
The Unvault way
Value first
  • Verified purity and net gold weight explained
  • Marks interpreted alongside testing
  • Gold, stones, and other components considered separately
  • The complete piece reviewed before any scrap decision
  • You review the estimate before choosing to ship

What determines your 22K gold’s value

22K is the purity most often misread from its stamp alone. Three things build the estimate: what the metal is, how much of it is gold, and what the piece is beyond its weight.

Section illustration

Confirm that the item is 22K gold

22K means 22 parts gold out of 24, nominally about 91.7% pure. You will see it stamped 22K or 22KT, and often as 916 or 917, which are millesimal fineness marks for the same nominal purity rounded two different ways.

Marks still need verifying. Stamps get worn, applied loosely and occasionally faked, and actual purity is established by testing rather than by reading the number.

What matters just as much is whether the item is solid. Plated, filled, bonded and mixed-metal pieces carry gold over a base core and hold little or no gold value. Photograph every mark clearly, along with the complete item from both sides.

Spot price and pure gold weight set the baseline

Start with the two numbers on the bar: gross weight and fineness. Multiply them and you have the pure gold content. A 100 g bar at 999.9 fineness holds 99.99 g of pure gold. That figure, set against the spot price, is the baseline everything else works from.

Gold is quoted per troy ounce, which is about 31.103 grams. That is heavier than the ordinary ounce of roughly 28.35 grams, and confusing the two is one of the most common ways a seller misreads a quote. Bars are sold in grams (1 g, 5 g, 10 g, 100 g, 1 kg) and in troy ounces (1 oz, 10 oz), so check which unit a quote is using before you compare it to anything. The gold calculator will get you to a ballpark before you talk to anyone.Calculate the net gold content

Once purity is verified, the baseline is arithmetic: net gold weight, times the verified fineness, times the gold price at a stated date and time.

Net is where 22K differs from most karats. Traditional bangles, kadas and hollow chains are often filled with lac, wax or resin. Necklaces may be strung on thread, and enamel work adds weight that is not metal. Gemstones, clasps and steel springs come out too, and all of it is deducted before the multiplication.

Because the gold price moves through the trading day, any figure should carry its own time stamp. Yours holds for 30 days from the estimate.

Review the whole piece before treating it as scrap

High purity does not make the metal the whole story. 22K is the standard for South Asian and Middle Eastern jewelry; where hand-worked kundan, meenakari, filigree and temple work can represent real labor value that a scale does not register.

Ornate does not automatically mean a premium, though. Plenty of elaborate pieces are valued on their gold, and the difference comes down to who made it, how well it was made, whether the marks are present, the condition it is in, and whether anyone is currently buying that style. Gemstones are assessed separately, on their own terms, and antique pieces are judged on their character as much as their content.

Selling 22K gold: FAQs

What do 22K, 916, and 917 mean on gold jewelry?

They are two systems describing the same thing. 22K is the karat system: 22 parts gold out of 24, or about 91.67%. 916 and 917 are millesimal fineness marks, expressing that purity as parts per thousand, and the difference between them is rounding. 916 rounds down, 917 rounds up; which you see depends largely on where the piece was made. Indian jewelry is usually marked 916. None of the three is proof on its own, because a stamp records what a manufacturer claimed. Purity is confirmed by testing.

How much is 22K gold worth per gram today?

Take the verified fineness, apply it to the net gold weight, and multiply by the gold price at a stated moment. One gram of 22K contains roughly 0.917 grams of pure gold; its better to work from that rather than from the gross weight on your scale. Any figure without a date and time attached is close to meaningless, because gold moves continuously through the trading day.

Your Unvault estimate shows the fineness, the net weight and the price used, along with when it was taken, and it holds for 30 days. You can run the same numbers yourself using our gold calculator.

Is 22K gold more valuable than 18K or 14K gold?

Per gram, yes, and by a wide margin. 22K carries about 91.7% gold against 75% for 18K and 58.5% for 14K, so the same weight holds substantially more metal. That is only the metal, though. A heavy 14K piece can beat a light 22K one, and design, stones, maker and condition all move the final number.

Be sure to weigh what you have, photograph the marks, and let an itemized estimate compare them properly rather than assuming the higher karat wins.

How do buyers test 22K gold without damaging it?

The usual first step is XRF, an X-ray fluorescence scan that reads composition without marking the piece. It is quick and non-destructive, but it reads the surface, so on a plated or filled item it can report the coating rather than the core. That is why it is paired with other checks: specific gravity, which compares weight against displaced water, and where needed a touchstone and acid streak taken from an inconspicuous spot.

We know that every method has limits, and a careful buyer will tell you which was used and why.

Why is the buyer’s weight lower than my kitchen scale reading?

Usually two things at once. Gold is priced in troy weight, where a troy ounce is 31.1 grams rather than the 28.35 grams of a standard ounce, so comparing the two directly makes any figure look wrong and ultimately a buyer weighs net gold, not the whole object. Stones, clasps, steel springs, thread, enamel and the lac or wax inside hollow bangles all come off first. Kitchen scales are also imprecise at jewelry weights. Ask for the gross weight, the deductions and the net figure separately.

Can I sell broken or inherited 22K gold without a receipt?

Yes. Paperwork helps, but it has never been what establishes what a piece is, and most inherited gold arrives without any. Broken clasps, snapped chains, bent bangles and single earrings all still carry their full gold content. What matters is identification and testing, and both happen the same way whether or not you have a receipt.

Be sure to send the piece as it is, with any loose parts included, and do not pay for repairs beforehand.

Should I sell 22K jewelry to a pawn shop or gold buyer?

It depends which you value more, speed or explanation. A pawn shop or local gold buyer can pay the same day, and for a plain, worn piece that may be the whole answer. The questions worth asking are more about how they tested the purity, whether they will show the gross and net weights separately, what fees come off the top, and whether craftsmanship or stones were considered at all. If those answers are vague, get a second itemized estimate before you accept.

How can I avoid being lowballed for 22K gold?

Work from numbers you can check. This means establishing the verified purity rather than the stamped one, get the net weight after deductions, and calculate a melt baseline yourself using a spot price with a date and time on it. Then ask for the offer itemized against those figures, and compare net proceeds after fees rather than headline numbers.

An offer that cannot be broken into parts cannot be compared with anything. Take the time your estimate allows, since yours holds 30 days.
