The current estimated melt value of solid 12K gold is $69.90 per gram. The figure applies a 50 percent purity factor to the approved live gold-price source. It should not be applied to the full weight of a gold-filled item.

A 500 mark generally means 500 parts gold per thousand, or 50 percent gold, which corresponds to 12K. Inspect every nearby letter and symbol because GF, RGP or overlay wording changes the meaning of the item.

It can be. An item marked only 12K, 12KT or 500 may be represented as solid 12K gold, subject to testing. An item marked 12K GF or 1/20 12K GF is gold filled, which means a layer of 12K gold is bonded to a base metal.
