What Is 18K Gold Worth? What 18K Really Means

Gold’s purity is measured in karats, with 24‑karat representing pure gold. Each step down the scale blends gold with other metals to improve strength and adjust color. According to the World Gold Council, 18‑carat gold contains 75% gold and 25% other metals such as copper or silver. This blend is sometimes marked inside jewelry with a 750 stamp, reflecting its 0.750 fineness.

Those added metals aren’t just filler; they influence the hue and durability. Yellow 18K gold typically includes 15% silver and 10% copper, while white and rose gold use different alloy recipes to achieve their distinctive colors. Because 18K pieces contain three‑quarters as much gold as pure (24K), their melt value is roughly 75% of the daily spot price.

Here is how 18K compares to other karats:

  • 24K (99.9% pure): bright yellow, very soft, and rarely used for everyday jewelry
  • 18K (75% pure): rich color, slightly softer than 14K gold, and more valuable per gram
  • 14K (58.3% pure): more durable and affordable, widely used for everyday rings and chains
  • 10K (41.7% pure): the most affordable, paler in color, legally the minimum karat in some markets

How To Calculate 18K Gold Price Per Gram

Estimating the worth of an 18K item involves more than looking up the price per gram. You need to know its weight, purity, and the current spot price of pure gold. The standard formula for melt value, or the value of the gold content alone  is:

Melt value = Weight (grams) × 0.75 × Spot price of pure gold per gram

A simple 5-gram band, for example, would have a melt value of around $580 based on April 2026 rates (5 × $116.11 ≈ $580). However, melt value is just the starting point and not what you actually receive.

That same 5-gram ring at a low-paying buyer nets you roughly $348. A specialist buyer offering 85% gets you closer to $493. The spread between buyers on the same piece can easily be $200 or more; which is why shopping around before you sell 18K gold matters.

Factors That Influence an 18K Gold Ring’s Worth

  • Weight and purity: Heavier rings contain more gold, but the karat number must be verified. Stamps like 18K or 750 are starting points, yet they aren’t proof – hallmarks can be worn or inaccurate.
  • Current gold price: Live market data determines the melt value. Prices fluctuate daily.
  • Design and craftsmanship: Intricate designs or famous makers add value beyond metal content.
  • Gemstones: Diamonds or other stones must be appraised separately; their cut, clarity and carat weight can change the total dramatically.
  • Brand and provenance: Luxury brands and vintage pieces often carry collector premiums.
  • Condition: Wear, damage and repairs affect resale value; pristine pieces command higher offers.

The only way to know what YOUR piece is worth

Although you can estimate melt value at home using the formula above, professional testing is essential to know exactly what an 18K gold ring, or any piece for that matter, is actually worth. Stamps only indicate intended purity. Multiple testing methods, including electronic testers and X-ray fluorescence, are used to confirm karat before determining value. This thorough verification ensures you're not over- or under-estimating your piece's worth.

Sellers should get quotes from multiple buyers before deciding, as the spread on the same piece can be $200 or more.

18K gold price — FAQs

How much is 18K gold worth per gram today?

18K gold is worth approximately $105.26 per gram today, based on the current gold spot price. This represents the estimated value of the gold content before buyer deductions or additional value from stones, maker, design and condition.

Is 18K gold real gold?

Yes. Solid 18K gold is real gold containing 18 parts gold out of 24, or exactly 75% pure gold. The remaining 25% consists of other metals added to influence the jewelry’s strength, color and wearability.

What does 750 mean on gold jewelry?

A 750 mark indicates 750 parts pure gold out of 1,000, which equals 75% gold or 18K. It is commonly found inside ring bands, near necklace and bracelet clasps, on earring posts and behind pendants.

Read the complete mark. A stamp containing GP, GF, GEP or similar letters may describe a plated or layered item rather than solid 18K gold.

Is 18K gold worth more than 14K gold?

At the same verified weight, 18K gold has a higher gold-content value because it is 75% pure, while 14K is approximately 58.33% pure.

The complete value of two pieces can still differ because of their stones, maker, craftsmanship, age, condition and resale demand.

Can a hallmark confirm that my jewelry is 18K gold?

A mark such as 18K or 750 is useful evidence, but it does not guarantee purity. Marks can be worn, incomplete or applied to plated and counterfeit items.

Professional buyers may use electronic testing, acid testing or X-ray fluorescence to help confirm the metal’s composition.

Can an 18K designer or vintage piece be worth more than its melt value?

Yes. A recognized maker, signed design, documented provenance, desirable period or original condition may increase its resale value beyond the value of the gold alone.

Before selling a vintage or branded piece for its metal, check for maker’s marks, serial numbers, original packaging, receipts and authentication documents.
