How to Determine Your Jewelry’s Value With a Gold Ring Appraisal

A gold ring's appraised value is determined by its weight, karat purity, the current gold spot price, and any additional worth from gemstones, brand origin, or craftsmanship.

The karat indicates how much pure gold is present in the alloy. The percentage of gold in 10K is 41.7%, in 14K it is 58.3%, in 18K it is 75%, and in 24K it is 99.9%.

After multiplying the overall weight of your ring by the karat percentage, multiply the weight of pure gold by the current price per gram.

The Four Factors Appraisers Evaluate

  • Weight is measured in grams or troy ounces. A heavier ring means more gold content and a higher base value.

  • Karat purity indicates how much of the ring is actually gold. A 14K ring is 58.3% pure gold, while an 18K ring is 75%. Higher karat means more gold per gram.

  • Current spot price is the market's anchor. Since the price of gold was about $5,000 per troy ounce in early 2026,¹ even tiny rings have real value. A 10-gram 14K gold ring contains about 5.83 grams of pure gold, or roughly $940 in metal content alone.

  • Design and provenance matter too. A Tiffany or Cartier ring is much more expensive than its melt value. Vintage settings, rare gemstones, or notable craftsmanship can push the appraisal higher.

Which Appraisal Value Are You Getting?

Insurance appraisals reflect retail replacement cost and produce the highest number.

Fair market value appraisals, used for estate planning or divorce, sit in the middle.

Resale appraisals, which are usually between 70 and 85 percent of melt value through reliable internet marketplaces, represent what a buyer would actually pay you today.
